Break Even - 80s Rock

In our final incarnation, we had Derek McReavy of Metal Echo on drums, Gary B. Swift on bass & harmony VOX, Billy Gilkerson on guitar and lead VOX, Amy Ferguson on lead VOX and percussion, and Bob Smile on lead guitar & guitar-synth.

Welcome

After 3 years and 30 gigs, Break Even has officially dissolved (late summer 2011). Don't be too sad, though, as it is highly likely that our individual members will play together again as we experience the revolving door that is so common to part-time bands. We have had a blast during our most recent 3-year incarnation, and we greatly appreciate all of our fans who enjoyed our music and provided "audience participation" for our gigs. We have been... and always shall be... friends.

YouTube Video

This is a live performance of Barracuda from an employee picnic event in Carson City, Summer of 2010.

Audio Clips

Here are a few 30-second demo clips that will give you an idea of how we sounded about halfway through our 3-year run.

Anyone who knew John can see that Amy takes after her Dad in this photo (except for being a girl, of course)... Amy will always be our favorite Pharmacist. Despite her youth, she has a particular fondness for Pop Rock songs from the 80s. Amy served as our business agent, and booked most of our shows in 2011. Her influences include bands such as Foreigner, Journey, and Whitesnake.

Andrew speaks softly and carries a very BIG STICK, indeed! In our final months, Andrew became our "go-to" auxiliary guitarist. He is a multi-project guy, contributing his chops to an up-and-coming group known as The Engineered Disaster (no website yet). His Classic Metal experience blended surprisingly well with our 80s Rock and Blues mix. Andrew is an Air Force Veteran.

Pickin & Grinnin. Well, more like Singin & Strummin - probably to a favorite Blues tune! Billy is still our main Blues fan, and after Dave left, he was our only remaining founding member from the "Free Range" band in Y2K. He also leads the contemporary Mass at Saint Gall Catholic church. Billy was our ambassador of good cheer. His influences include R&B and Blues giants such as Wilson Pickett, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Muddy Waters.

Bob has zoned out and gone to that place where creativity and taste commune with Space-Time. Please ensure that your seatbelt is securely fastened and all carry-on luggage has been properly stowed... Bob embodied the essence of Classic Rock Lead Guitar. As another multi-project guy, you can still catch him playing with his other "Classic Roots Rock Americana" band, The Bootleggers (no website yet). Bob was our musical director.

Dave played drums, booked gigs, arranged songs, and maintained his PA equipment and transportation trailer. Dave pulled former bandmates Billy and Gary together - along with newcomers Amy & Bob - in 2008, to resurrect Break Even. He selected our songs, booked our gigs, directed our arrangements, provided a PA system and a practice space, and whipped us into a semi-coherent band that he led until being sidelined for major back surgery, when our Canuck coworker stepped up to drum for us.

For some reason, Derek plays much better when he's barefoot. Maybe it's because he is a Canuck? Derek filled in on drums after Dave went under the knife. He is yet another multi-project musician, providing the tempo for his excellent "dark rock" band, Metal Echo. Here is a local performance that Metal Echo did in early 2011. In his spare time Derek runs an Audio/Video Production Studio called Pistachio Productions. He is heavily influenced by the Alternative Seattle sound of the 1990s, which includes such bands as Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.

Gary adds the Thump that shakes the Rump. Gary also plays in the contemporary service at Trinity Lutheran church, and has occasionally jammed with a few other coworkers (including Bob). He was also our webmaster, historian and "Aging Hippie." As a Prog-Space-Rock fan ever since the genre was invented, his favorite bands are Pink Floyd & Yes. Gary is a Navy Veteran.
